Pair linen pillowcases Provenance Wanamaker family estate circa early 1900s. This pair of white linen pillowcases measure 23 by 37.5 inches, the hems are stitched by hand with fine little almost invisible stitches, the seam is Frenched, the hem has a row of hand drawnwork, the bottom closure has hand made buttonholes and 4 mother of pearl buttons, there is a hand embroidered monogram in faded red that reads RW for Rodman Wanamaker, Rodman was the son of John Wanamaker the founder of the Wanamaker stores. Wanamakers was considered the first department store in Philadelphia, they were known for luxury goods, particularly from France. The Wanamaker family was quite wealthy and well known, the linens from the estate were of the finest quality and with the family monogram is truly a fine piece of history! The monograms are faded, one pillowcase has a small (4mm) light stain on the front the set is otherwise all very good, I have washed and pressed them. The linen is of thew highest quality, it is smooth, cool to touch and buttery soft with a wonderful, fluid drapiness only antique linen has! |
