Circa: 1910 Condition: used Size: 27.5 bt 28 inches Color: white Country of Origin: France Manufacturer: French antique linens
Armorial damask linen napkins 6 Provenance Wanamaker family estate early 1900s, not perfect. This set of 6 white linen damask napkins measures 27.5 by 28 inches, the hems are stitched by hand with tiny little stitches, the design elements have, centered in the French fashion, a large family crest of 3 eagles in a shield around a star under a knights helmet underneath the shield is the latin Ubique Patriam Reminisci, 4 have the name John Wanamaker Jr. and 2 hand the name Rodman Wanamaker, the edges of the napkins have a floral pattern. Rodman was the son of John Wanamaker the founder of the Wanamaker stores. Wanamakers was considered the first department store in Philadelphia, they were known for luxury goods, particularly from France. The Wanamaker family was quite wealthy and well known, the linens from the estate were of the finest quality and with the family monogram is truly a fine piece of history! All the napkins have flaws, 1 has a hand darn, 2 have stains, 1 has a small tear at the edge, 2 have more than one hole and have not been darned, I have washed and pressed them. The linen is of the highest quality, it has a substantial, soft, silky hand! |
