| Rare Armorial Limerick lace altar cloth or shawl with royalty figures early 1800s. This ivory lace piece measures 23 by 102 inches, the lace was made using a machine made net and the designs were embroidered into the mesh by HAND. There are 2 words worked into the lace on little banners Monta and Tanto, from what I have researched, these are Italian, Monta is a Municipality in Cuneo in the north west region of Italy. The figures appear to be a king and queen, there is an eagle in the center with a coat of arm on it, there are 2 standing figures flanking the eagle holding staffs wearing clothing adorned with armorial figures, under the eagle are more male and female figures, the letters F and R (I think) flank the figures, there are 2 more eagles on each side and a bundle of arrows in 2 of the corners. This piece looks to have been custom made for a special occasion, perhaps a very important marriage, it has been an interesting study and I have never seen another piece like this! There is a 1 inch long tear on one end and some holes, the largest hole is about 1/2 inch and is near the tear, most of the holes (about 20 in all) are very small, the piece is otherwise in good condition, the lace is soft and supple and still strong. |
