Gorgeous hand woven Japanese silk brocade obi circa 1700s. This piece measures 12.75 inches wide (25.5 if opened flat) and is 77 inches long, my guess is that it was cut at some point and hemmed perhaps to display. The brocade type is discontinuous, as seen from the back, the threads are only in small areas around the pattern, they do not run to the edge of the fabric, this was popular in weavings of the 1700s. The colors are an antique gold back ground with muted green vegetation with copper. lavender, slate blue and cream flowers, very beautiful and skilled weaving! There is some age oxidation and some small areas of shattering at the fold line which is not at all surprising in a textile this age, the fabric is otherwise in good condition and would display beautifully! |
