| Lovely society silk and linen tray cloth with roses circa about 1900. This white linen tray cloth measures 21 by 29.5 inches, the hems are hand stitched with a row of drawn work, 2 corners have stems of pink species roses and dianthus with more dianthus on the sides. The handwork is first rate with realistic shading and a variety of stitches used to create texture and detail, obviously the work of a skilled embroiderer. There are 2 pinholes in the linen, the piece is otherwise in excellent condition, I have washed and pressed it. Society silk pieces were those pieces done by well to do ladies who had the money and the skill to work in silk, these were the pieces they took with them to work on when they went on social calls and such to show off their needle working skills and were often presented as cherished gifts. |
