| Unusual society silk and linen tablecloth with espaliered apples circa 1800s. This cream linen tablecloth measures 30 by 31 inches, the rare hand embroidered design is of asters and espaliered apples, lovely handwork in fall colors with blush colored apples! Society silk pieces were those pieces done by well to do ladies who had the money and the skill to work in silk, these were the pieces they took with them to work on when they went on social calls and such to show off their needle working skills and were often presented as cherished gifts. There is a rather poor repair at the top that I have pictured and a small hole at the hem edge as well as 6 places where some stitches have worn or are missing on the branches, the piece is otherwise good, I have washed and pressed it. Even with the flaws, this is a rare design, executed with skill and flair. |
