Late 17th century (1600s) handmade linen Flemish lace de-accessioned from a museum with tag. This lovely lace has a strip of 3/4 inch hand woven linen at one edge, the lace is hand stitched to the linen using tiny stitches in 3 lengths as follows one length 35 inches, one length 92 inches and one length 36 inches, the total is 163 inches (4.5 yards), it is 4.25 inches deep including the linen fabric which was most likely made at the same time period the lace was. The museum tag reads Flemish Lace altar piece late 17th century. The lace design had the swirling patterns typical of that time period. There are a few small holes in the lace, but it is in remarkable condition for its age, its still pliant and strong. This is a marvelous example of very early linen bobbin lace!
