19th century homespun linen and silk sampler with figures tells a story Fabulous 19th century homespun linen and silk embroidered sampler with figures. This sampler with frame measures 18.75 by 30.5 inches, the inside of the frame measures 17 by 29. The embroidery is very skillfully done cross stitch in silk threads it shows both the written and printed alphabet letters and then a number of figures that seem top tell a story, I see a possibly African king and queen , a cross, a soldier, and a woman with 2 children with a childlike angel in a group (my guess is this is a family and on of the children died and is the angel depicted), there are dogs, and many birds, flowers, baskets, urns and such, also a cross in a cartouche with IHS (In His Service) perhaps they were missionaries? I see a pair of lions rampant (British?) and a gentleman with a cane and top hat, another person is deer hunting, and a man with a whip training a horse. Another group shows a person in a robe giving a flower to a king with a staff with palm trees and the largest pictures are of a bird and a white rose (again possible British references). The handwork is fascinating and the colors are still quite good, there is a water stain on the bottom and age browning, the piece is otherwise in very good condition. This is one of the nicest samplers I have seen in a while.
Circa: 1800s
Condition: used
Color: cream, polychrome

Handmade wood turned embroidery or needle work frame circa 1800s Handmade wood embroidery or needle work frame circa 1800s. This frame measures 3.5 by 16.5 at the base and the frame part is 13 by 15.5 inches, the frame is made using a hardwood that has been hand turned the wooden screw shafts are done by hand note the scribe marks in the pictures, the grain painting is also done by hand. The frame adjusts by turning the round disks up or down, it also rotates from flat to full upright position easily with the old wing nuts on the sides, the screws and wings of these look fairly early. There are a couple of small nicks, some wear and 2 of the turned feet have been replaced, it is otherwise in very good working condition, adjustments are easily made as everything turns the way it should. This is a unique hand made piece!
Circa: 1800s
Condition: very good
Size: 13 by 15.5 inches
Color: brown tones
