Early Ayrshire whitework and Valenciennes lace hankie early 1800s Early Ayrshire whitework and lace hankie, all handmade circa 1st quarter of the 1800s. This hankie measures 20 inches square including the 1.5 inch handmade Valenciennes lace edging. The whitework is beautifully done, I have placed my pinky in one of the pics to show you just how fine the handwork is. The hand embroidered swag and flower garland runs around the entire edge of the hankie, very lovely, with fine needle lace filling stitches in the flowers, very precise work! There is a 3/4 inch tear in the fabric, the hanky is otherwise in good condition, I have not washed it so it retains its patina. This was part of the Florence Colgate Speranza collection.

There is a tag on the hankie that reads "hanky of Mrs. Lee, the stylized monogram is difficult to read but it looks like H or AJL to me. The hand embroidered whitework is pretty. This hanky is in fair-poor condition, there are several holes and splits in the fabric, the lace is mostly good. This would be an interesting piece for study.
